I am in Maine now, on my Uncle's super fast connection (at last!) and have spent a good percentage of my time helping with the hay. Who here has driven an old tractor? Mr Grandpa has 5 dating from as recent as about 1990 to one his father bought! They are fun to drive, but challenging! The principle of driving one is the reverse of a car. When you want to stop, you floor it! (The clutch, that is.) It is also a little bit scary knowing that if you line a little bit to far back on the 18" metal seat of the tractor that there would be nothing stopping the Teder (two rapidly rotating disks with prongs to turn over hay so it dries) from running over you! But they do go pretty fast, if you can start it without stalling the engine, and I've only had one close call, when I thought I was in 5th and turned around sharply on a slope when I really was in 6th! But all in all, it is quite fun, even if turning hay is like mowing the lawn without cutting it (and then having a 15 minute break and teding the whole thing again! I had the rain ruin my word once.) So that is what I'm doing while your at SDI

I like to drive with a manual transmission. I’ve only driven a car with manual though. It’s always so exciting because you have three peddles to keep track of and, like David said, you push in the clutch to disengage the engine and you let it out to reengage. I’ve gotten the gear shift messed up before too and I can say from experience that it is possible, but not recommended, to start our car from the 3rd gear.
I’ve helped with hay bailing before. Its hard work, but it’s a lot of fun.

Last of the hay's about to come in and I am going to see if I can drive the tractor through the barn!
Tommorow I will see if I can practice on my cousin's old van!
